Parks and Recreation Survey

The Mukilteo City Council requested staff to evaluate the potential development of a new Parks and Recreation Department. As a first step, staff recommended doing a community survey to assess current and future park and recreation needs. The information provided by the survey could serve as a basis for discussion on the community’s parks and recreation needs and priorities.

The city hired Leisure Vision to develop and conduct the survey. To assist with the development of the draft questionnaire, Leisure Vision conducted a series of stakeholder interviews and focus group workshops from December 13-15, 2006. Stakeholders included City Councilmembers, staff, and organizations involved in recreation. The consultant interviewed each Councilmember and various staff members. Additionally, the city invited over 30 community groups and private fitness organizations to three separate group workshops. The goal of the interviews and workshops was to ensure that most of the issues important to decision makers and stakeholders were addressed in the survey.

In February 2007, surveys were mailed to a random sample of 2,500 households.  Approximately two weeks after the surveys were mailed, Lesiure Vision followed up with phone contacts to either encourage completion of the mailed survey or to administer the survey by phone.  The goal was to obtain a total of at least 400 completed surveys which would have provided the city with a 95% level of confidence with a margin of error of +/-5%.  This goal was far exceeded with a total of 506 surveys having been completed. 

Staff then worked with Leisure Vision to finalize the content of the survey based on the feedback received and presented the results to City Council on April 16, 2007.
